简介：The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 简介：日本映画に名を残す名監督の一人と言われている今井正監督による本格派の時代劇で、主演が中村錦之助のこの作品。　　徳川幕府の治世下、播州脇坂藩竜野城で恒例の武器倉庫点検が行われていた。丁度通りかかった奏者番奥野孫太夫は槍の穂先の曇りをみつけ、皮肉な言葉でなじった。これを聞きとがめた江崎新八は、孫太夫と口論した。無役軽輩から侮辱された孫太夫は、新八に果し状をつきつけたが、結果は孫太夫が斬殺された。私闘と厳禁の掟を破った二人を、新八の兄馬廻り役江崎重兵衛と孫太夫の伯父丹羽伝兵衛は協議の末、乱心しての私闘届け出、新八は城下遠隔の地にある感応寺に預けられた。憤懣やるかたない新八であったが家名尊重のためと言いきかされ、いつか住職光悦との静かな生活は新八の気持を変えていった。一方奥野家では兄を殺されて、家督は継いだものの、弟主馬の心境は怒りにふるえていた。神蔭一刀流免許皆伝の腕をもつ主馬は、兄の仇をとろうと時を待ち、感応寺へ向った。心ならずも相対する新八に主馬は運悪く刀をとられ斬られた。この噂は藩内に広まり、公儀の沙汰として仇討を認めた藩は、奥野家の末弟辰之助に新八を斬らせねばならなかった。家を守るために弟を死に追いやらねばならぬ重兵衛は新八に藩命を告げた。武家の理不尽な掟に心では反抗しながらも、兄の苦衷を察した新八は、太刀の刃引きをして、幼友達辰之助に斬られる覚悟を決めていた。そんな新八を、光悦は他藩へ逃亡して人間として生きるよううながした。城下桔梗ケ原に竹矢来が組まれ、新八と辰之助は当日を迎えた。国家老片貝頼母の合図で仇討は開始された。一瞬、辰之助を間に六人の助太刀が飛び出した。死を覚悟していた新八の心は変わった。死にもの狂いで六人にたちむかった新八は、血みどろで斬りかかっていった。しかし、素手で立ちはだかった重兵衛の姿にとまどうところを、藩士の槍が新八の胸を刺した。夕闇の立ちこめる竹矢来の中に、新八の死骸に重って重兵衛の切腹したむくろが、重っていた。
